Senior Design Team sdmay25-26 • Cost-Effective and Easily Configurable High Voltage Motor Controllers for Automotive Use

Project Overview

The rise in electric vehicles has grown the market for automotive parts not commonly used prior. This has an effect not just on typical electric cars, but on other lightweight automotives as well. University solar car teams have been a decades-long testing bed for electric vehicles and the technology that has eventually made it to mainstream production vehicles. Iowa State has been a long-time participant in this and therefore making Iowa State's solar vehicles and their motors excellent testing beds for improved high voltage motor controllers. Custom, easily configurable motor controllers will be developed that can be used by the same motors Iowa State's solar car team as well as other vehicles (such as electric bikes) while being more affordable than current comparable motor controllers.

Software Design & Adherence

I am a Computer Engineering major at Iowa State University. I am also the embedded software manager of PRISUM Solar Car Club. I've worked on a number of embedded software projects, such as cruise control for the solar car. Fittingly, I have an embedded software job where I work on the software for industrial sensors.

Testing & Systems Compliance

Hello, I am studying Computer Engineering this year as a senior and will be returning next year for my Master's. Outside of class I currently lead the Solar Car team as the Project Director and play percussion in the ISU Concert Band.

Jonah Frosch

Hardware Design

I'm currently studying Electrical Engineering at Iowa State to get my Bachelor's, with a focus on Power Systems. I enjoy circuit design and battery pack construction. In my free time, I like to go on long distance bike rides and play video games.

Docs & Software Control

I study Computer Engineering and plan on getting my masters in it as well at Iowa State. Through my studies, I have enjoyed embedded systems and firmware. Outside of school, I enjoy weight lifting and playing board games.

Team Organization

I major in electrical engineering with passion for technology and innovation. Having some experience in testing, hardware design, and interships. In the future, I plan to pursue a master's degree in engineering management. During my free time, I would like to play video games, design and build my own loudspeakers, and enjoy the music.
